Now, it's pretty rare for me not to have seen even a smidge of a given sci-fi show, especially one which is so popular. Before September, I could have said the same thing about Stargate. Both shows are popular, and after watching all of Stargate SG-1 and then Atlantis in order in one multi-week sprint, I've begun to suspect their popularity is well deserved.
The Stargate sprint helped me through some nasty personally emotional weeks, and I'm hoping nearly thirty years worth of Doctor Who and then Torchwood can do the same.
Yes, it's escapism. I'm ok with that.
Besides, what kind of self-respecting geek would I be if I didn't have any familiarity with one of the pillars of sci-fi television?
